BARRIER research presented at ECMTB 2026

Researchers from the BARRIER project attended the European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB) 2026 held in Gräz, Austria, bringing together researchers working across mathematical and computational biology.

Sandeep Shirgill and Professor Sara Jabbari represented BARRIER at the conference, where Sandeep presented initial work from the project as part of a mini-symposium.

The presentation introduced BARRIER’s mathematical modelling work investigating how antimicrobials accumulate within bacterial cells. By combining mathematical models with experimental data, the research aims to understand how processes such as membrane permeability and efflux determine intracellular antimicrobial concentrations and contribute to antimicrobial resistance.

Attending ECMTB also provided an opportunity to share the project’s early findings with the wider mathematical biology community and disc use approaches to modelling antimicrobial resistance with researchers from across the field.
